However, the majority of the movie is filmed through a series of video chats and the rest is shot on a handheld camera. The handheld footage continues in the third sequel. There aren't any brilliant performances, but they do fine with the material. She solid when she's actually on screen, but she isn't utilized to her full potential. While Katie Featherston has returned to the role of Katie, she's barely in this movie. There isn't a lot to this character, but Newton has turned out to be a good casting decision. However, she's surprisingly charming on screen. With young Kathryn Newton handling the main role of Alice, I wasn't sure how this would work out. Whether or not you're a fan of these films, this one will not feel like an actual continuation of the story. This could have been the opportunity to bring something fresh to the franchise, while still going back and answering questions that continue to be dropped through each feature. The screenplay doesn't do very much other than cheapen what we've seen in the previous movies. Alice stops researching once she discovers what type of demon it is, which we were already informed of in a previous entry. Those who want to hear more about this demon's mythology won't learn anything new. Paranormal Activity 4 doesn't fit in with the first three entries of the series, as it never successfully creates a connection. While Paranormal Activity 3 isn't a masterpiece, it showed audiences what Katie and Kristi's childhood was like with this entity following them. After sitting through the annoying build-up, the ending isn't worth the wait. There's absolutely nothing surprising or scary about the final act. The most recent flick disappoints, as even the ending plays it safe. The first film placed the majority of the paranormal interactions to this portion of the movie and it was very effective. However, Paranormal Activity 4 lacks an acceptable climax. There are so many sequences where we're left looking at blank rooms with nothing happening until the final 20 minutes. When Robbie moves into Alice's house and all of the cameras are set up, Alice and Alex randomly stop checking the video footage, making this an incredibly contrived plot element. The majority of the movie isn't about anything paranormal, but is about the everyday life of this family, which gets boring. The concept of focusing on the neighbors is alright, but moviegoers are introduced to a much more irritating build-up than what we've seen in the previous entries. The two teenagers decide to set up laptops and cameras around the house in order to capture all of the strange occurrences that have been taking place in the house. They become suspicious of young Robbie (Brady Allen) when he moves into Alice's house for a few days when his mom is in the hospital. Alice (Kathryn Newton) is a teenager who constantly video chats with her boyfriend, Alex (Matt Shively). While fans will still want to see this to find out what happens, everybody else should avoid it.įive years after Katie (Katie Featherston) and Hunter disappeared in Paranormal Activity 2, a suburban family begins to witness strange events in the neighborhood. This film fails to create a cohesive story and isn't able to bring anything original to the series. Unfortunately, the filmmakers don't bother to explain anything. By this point in the franchise, Paranormal Activity 4 should be wrapping the story up by providing audiences with answers. Those entries aren't nearly as good as the original and a lot of other questions have been created and left unanswered. Paramount quickly cashed in on the opportunity and made two sequels rather eagerly. When the first Paranormal Activity was released, it became a hit with moviegoers who wanted to watch something scary. IGFA Fishing Hall of Famer, Tom Evans, 84, has spent a lifetime pursuing the largest of the species on fly. (The poet, Richard Brautigan, perhaps came the closest to doing so, describing it as “immediate unreality.”) And they are one of the few game species that actually fight back-with spectacular leaps and violent, powerful runs-on terms that are, more or less, equal with that of the angler. The initial “eat” of a tarpon is such an otherworldly experience that it is nearly impossible to describe with words. They are beautiful, majestic animals-their silver scales can, at times, appear green or pink or purple, depending on where you are targeting them. Tarpon are the largest of the “Big Three” species encountered on the flats in the western hemisphere, the others being permit and bonefish. Mill’s award-winning book, A Passion for Tarpon, is arguably the most concise and complete book written about tarpon angling, and further served to raise the profile of the sport and draw attention to the need to conserve the fishery.Īs recipients of this year’s awards, Dixon and Mill will be enshrined in BTT’s Circle of Honor, housed in the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada, Florida.Talking Tarpon with Tom Evans and Andy Mill Talking tarpon with two giants of the sport By Monte Burke For many fly anglers, fishing for tarpon is the apex experience of the sport. The popular Millhouse Podcast, which Mill co-costs with his son Nicky, is his latest media venture to entertain and rally flats anglers. After retiring from skiing in 1981, Mill had a 20-year broadcasting career, covering two Olympics and hundreds of network specials, and hosting the acclaimed series, Sportsman’s Journal with Andy Mill.Ī BTT Honorary Trustee, Mill has used to his platform to raise awareness of BTT’s mission and engage the angling community in conservation of the flats fishery. A former Olympic skier, Mill is considered one of the best tarpon fly anglers of all time, winning The Gold Cup and The Golden Fly tournaments five times each and The Don Hawley tournament once. Dixon continues to divide his time guiding between Montauk and the Florida Keys.īTT will honor Mill with The Curt Gowdy Memorial Media Award, which is presented annually to those who advance saltwater conservation through writing, entertainment, and media outreach. Under Dixon’s leadership, the annual event has raised millions of dollars for BTT’s conservation programs that span from the southeastern US to the Yucatán Peninsula. He went on to open his own store, Dixon’s Sporting Life, in East Hampton, and began guiding in the Florida Keys, where he contributed to BTT’s early tarpon research.Ī member of the BTT Advisory Council and a vocal advocate for fisheries conservation, Dixon was also instrumental in establishing BTT’s annual New York City fundraiser and has co-chaired the event for many years, cultivating support for BTT in the Northeast. In the early 1980s, he moved to the East Coast, spending five years working at Orvis in New York City. Recognized as one of the early pioneers of sight-fishing for striped bass in the Northeast, Dixon began fly-fishing in 1971 in Idaho, where he took a summer job guiding. We’re grateful to have this opportunity to recognize their many contributions to our success.”ĭixon will receive the Lefty Kreh Award for Lifetime Achievement in Conservation, which is the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his volunteer support of conservation at BTT and several other organizations over more than two decades. “Their rise in the sport paralleled our founding and early growth as a conservation organization, and they were with us every step of the way, sharing their spotlight to highlight our mission and inspire others to join our ranks. “Paul Dixon and Andy Mill are legends on the flats and in BTT’s history,” said BTT President and CEO Jim McDuffie. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust will honor fishing guide Captain Paul Dixon and angler Andy Mill at the 11th Annual NYC Dinner & Awards Ceremony on October 6, 2022. Once you get close to 90% hard drive capacity on even the most modern Mac computer, you’ll start to experience slowdowns when performing everyday tasks.įor us photographers using GPU and CPU intensive image editors like Adobe Lightroom and Skylum Luminar, every spare GB of RAM and disk space is essential for a smooth experience.Ĭameras seem to be producing bigger and bigger files each year, which means we need to be especially vigilant with our storage if we want to keep computer performance running smoothly.ĬMMX can be especially useful if you use Apple Photos. If you own a MacBook Pro or any Mac product with an SSD welded in place, you’ll know how important it is to maintain a healthy amount of free drive space. If it weren’t for using this handy app, I would have been forced to buy a new Macbook Pro by now, simply to get more disk space. I have saved over 100GB of flash drive space! In fact, I’ve owned CleanMyMacX for about 2 months now and run it every week. I’ve been using CleanMyMacX regularly, so you can see that there isn’t a huge amount of system junk to remove in the screenshot below: I don’t really care either – all I know is that the software is safely removing things I don’t need, helping my Mac run faster and more efficiently. There’s a lot that goes on when you click the Scan button in CleanMyMacX, and to be honest, I don’t have a clue what that is! I’m sure Steve Jobs would have approved of this piece of software! -) There’s a great sense of accomplishment knowing that the things you can’t see on your Mac are also neatly arranged, with nothing superfluous clogging up the arteries. There’s something very satisfying about hitting the big round Scan button! You’ll be surprised at just how much junk is lurking behind the scenes on your Mac, doing absolutely nothing except take up space and make your computer run slower! It’s pretty eye-opening to say the least… But where I find most of them lose my interest and garner suspicion is in how little they inform the user of what process their app is running at any given time.CleanMyMac X Review | Smart Scan to Recover Spaceįirst things first – just download CMMX for free right here, run it on your Mac and see how much space you can recover. Mac "cleanup" apps aren't new, there are plenty available on the market. I tend to take decent care of my Mac, so it wasn't slow to begin with. No one wants freeing up disk space to become a multi-hour-long ordeal, which is what makes CleanMyMac X's segmented processes so convenient-if you know you only need to shred a few old files, there's no need to waste time sifting through your Safari cookies. Some operations take longer, like Smart Scan (which runs multiple processes concurrently), but most scanned and cleared up my Mac within 60 seconds. CleanMyMac X is far on the other end of the spectrum. Similar "cleanup" apps tend to veer off into complicated and shady software practices, failing to inform you of what they're doing to your personal computer. My favorite details are the jetty brackets and external posts that support the growing footprints of the middle story and the attic.Īlthough a good bit of the square footage is used up by the stairs to the top floor, the middle floor includes a kitchen and dining area with fantastic brick-built chairs. All together, these create a wonderfully textured, three-dimensional look that’s much more than a flat wall that’s mostly white and a bit brown. Brown bricks with studs facing out sit between white wall (infill) sections, providing attachment points for both straight and curved brown tiles, serving as vertical timbers and braces. Nevertheless, as a background detail with the focus on the main building, I think it does work.Īfter the stonework and landscaping of the ground level, the middle story is where the blacksmith’s medieval heritage shines. I’m less convinced by the apple tree in this set, which has exposed black roots, and whose four sub-assembly branches look much more obviously identical to each other. LEGO is leaning hard into foliage these days, from the beautifully autumnal tree in last year’s 10270 Bookshop modular building to Nick Vas’s stunning trees in Ninjago City and this year’s 10281 Bonsai Tree. Rounded corners soften the building’s footprint, with sections that extend out from the main base to accommodate the blacksmith’s working area and the well with a tree. True to its origins as a fan design, the blacksmith shop starts on an irregular base built from plates. Hobbyist builders have been creating structures on bases other than, well, baseplates for years, but most larger LEGO buildings like Modulars still start on 32×32 or 16×32 baseplates. We’ve seen compass, target, and “Once upon a time…” tiles previously, but more of these unusual printed elements is always welcome. The 2×4 sign tile is unique to this set, and the 1×4 plank tiles are actually a new design, subtly different from previous designs. Two of the printed tiles are new for 2020. The set includes no stickered elements, with all of the detailed designs being either brick-built or printed. But maybe I’m jaded after 11 years of LEGO CUUSOO/Ideas. But these write-ups have become so templatized that reading them adds very little to the build experience. I appreciate that the individual designers continue to take center stage in LEGO’s instructions for sets geared toward older builders - a number of my own LEGO friends have successfully earned 10,000 votes on LEGO Ideas, and several more are designers of official sets in Billund. I’m incredibly happy for Clemens, but his story is the same as just about every other winning fan designer (a big fan of LEGO theme XYZ since childhood, follow your dreams, etc.), while the in-house designers of the actual product similarly sound much the same (privileged to work on the fan designer’s wonderful design, etc.). I’m going to say something potentially controversial: More than a decade since LEGO launched the predecessor of today’s LEGO Ideas on the Japanese CUUSOO platform, both fan designer and in-house designer write-ups have started to sound pretty much all the same. The instruction booklet follows the same design aesthetic, providing a page highlighting the winning fan designer and another spread for the (costumed) in-house LEGO set designers. The set’s 2,000+ pieces come in 14 numbered bags, plus an unnumbered bag with large plates, and the instruction booklet in its own sleeve. The new packaging design announced last May is clearly here to stay, with a black background that highlights the main build on the front and detail views on the back. Not counting the gorgeous 40448 Vintage Car gift with purchase from the first half of January, the blacksmith shop is the first LEGO Ideas product released in 2021. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews. The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. The set includes 2,164 pieces with 4 minifigures, and will become available on February 1st, 2020 at a price of US $149.99 | CAN $199.99 | UK £134.99. Yesterday, LEGO officially revealed 21325 Medieval Blacksmith, an original design by LEGO fan designer Clemens Fiedler. But increasingly, LEGO has approved wholly original designs, such as 21310 Old Fishing Store. LEGO has continued to diversify the products that it sources and launches via its LEGO Ideas platform, which for many years has been perceived as focusing on licensed themes like Ghostbusters, Doctor Who, Voltron, and so on. If your manager asks you why your project should upgrade to. A thousand performance-impacting PRs went into runtime and core libraries this release, never mind all the improvements in ASP.NET Core and Windows Forms and Entity Framework and beyond. So, this year, consider this a “choose your own adventure.” If you’re here just looking for a super short adventure, one that provides the top-level summary and a core message to take away from your time here, I’m happy to oblige: In past years, I’ve received the odd piece of negative feedback about the length of some of my performance-focused write-ups, and while I disagree with the criticism, I respect the opinion. When I sat down to write this a few weeks ago, I was faced with a list of almost 1000 performance-impacting PRs (out of more than 7000 PRs that went into the release), and I’m excited to share almost 500 of them here with you. Over the course of the last year, every time I’ve reviewed a PR that might positively impact performance, I’ve copied that link to a journal I maintain for the purposes of writing this post. Most of the password managers on this list also have Apple Watch compatibility. The iOS password managers on this list provide end-to-end encryption, two-factor authentication (2FA), password security auditing, and a range of extra security features. However, I found a few password managers that are better than Keychain in every way. Some couldn’t sync my password vault across all of my devices, some often failed to auto-fill my login credentials, and others were too difficult to use or too expensive. During my tests, I learned that most products offered very little or no improvement over iCloud Keychain. I looked for apps with great security, intuitive interfaces, and more functionality than iCloud Keychain (Apple’s built-in password manager).
